Gut Feelings #13 was made while listening to Skinty Fia by Fontaines D.C. I’ve listened to this album a ton. The driving rhythm, the slow guitar lines, the deadpan vocals… it’s great. I live for a moody post-punk album. It’s depressed. It’s danceable. Do do do. La la la.

Gut Feelings #12. This one was made while listening to U.F.O. (1969) by Jim Sullivan. A solid folk-rock album with some interesting history. I came to this record through the lore. 6 years after the release of this album Jim Sullivan disappeared. His vehicle was found on the side of a New Mexico highway. While it’s very likely he wandered off into the desert and unfortunately perished, the story is that this album foreshadowed a disappearance, maybe even an alien abduction… 🛸

Gut Feelings #11. Made while listening to A Place I’ll Always Go (2017) by Palehound. I listened to this album a bunch last year when I was working. I remembered it as being upbeat, but on further listens it’s also sad! Sad but sweet. Which I love.

Gut Feelings #10. This one was made while listening to Quiet Fire (1971) by Roberta Flack. Quiet Fire is a great name for this album. It simmers. It boils at a low but steady heat. There’s a nice cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. And the album cover design is awesome.

Gut Feelings #08 was made while listening to Tangk (2024) by Idles. This record is as pretty as it is pummelling, as quietly introspective as it is heavy. A nice balance. “Save meeee from meeeee, I’m found, I’m found, I’m found.”

Gut Feelings #07 This one was made while listening to Lahai (2023) by Sampha. His album Process (2017) was a sad vibes staple of mine. This one is excellent too. Just as pretty, but it’s much lighter and bouncier and more hopeful. The print kind of looks like a birds nest? And the colours are bright. Makes sense, as this album is all birds and sky and the wonders of life.

Gut Feelings #06 was made while listening to Formal Growth In The Desert by Protomartyr. This album is a perfect mixture of grief and light, frustration and love. The guitars are amazing! So are the lyrics. A great record ✔️

Gut Feelings #05 was made while listening to Untame The Tiger by Mary Timony. This album feels like a warm drive with a lot of sun. And yeah it’s Mary Timony so it’s still got darkness, but it’s laid back? It’s classic rock? I like classic rock. Wanted this one to feel nice and warm.

Gut Feelings #04 This one was made while listening to Useless Coordinates (2019) by Drahla. I checked out this album after hearing the opener “Gilded Cloud.” I do live for a jagged lil’ post punk album with female and/or doubled vocals and the occasional saxophone. Got some black drag on this one when printing, but it kinda works with the mood of the whole thing. That creeping tension...

Gut Feelings #03 was made while listening to Sentimental Fool (2022) by Lee Fields. If you listen to this album your day is immediately slower and sexier and more uplifted. Despite the hardship and heartbreak and longing expressed, there is a catharsis to his incredible voice that feels jubilant. It’s easy to picture Lee Fields pouring his heart out in a dark club under hot lights on this record, and this print reflects that sweaty, melting feeling.

Gut Feelings #02 was made while listening to American Thighs (1993) by Veruca Salt. While the big hit on this album was the more uptempo Seether, it’s all the slower, more plodding tracks with thick syrupy distortion and pretty harmonies that really do it for me. It’s the way the guitar drops at the end of “25.” There are a lot of mentions of the colour yellow in “Forsythia” which showed up in the colour choices. Lots of layered shapes here to rep that thick compressed distortion and all the lush vocal harmonies sitting on top of it.

Stepping out of my comfort zone this month with an ongoing series of 12” mono prints inspired by albums called GUT FEELINGS. It’s all colours and shapes and feelings and accepting imperfections and the thrill of that single surprising pull. I made this one while listening to Nilsson Schmilsson (1970) by Harry Nilsson. A new album for me recommended by Tim. It’s an album that’s sunny on the surface, but there’s a darkness in every corner that I like. The album feels like it’s happening in that sweet spot between very late at night and very early in the morning. Without You hits so hard. Good album.
